UI MESSAGING AUDIT
The Problem
An SaaS organization wanted to use a single, consistent voice across its entire UI in both desktop and mobile platforms. Internal product developers and stakeholders had used varying tenses, inconsistent messaging patterns, and different voices while features were built, and the end result was disjointed.
The Process
I reviewed the desktop and mobile app, and performed a thorough site audit. Identifying every string of copy into three states of compliancy, I rewrote and revised messaging strings that were inconsistent or confusing. I vetted the audit out to internal teams and stakeholders by chapter, gaining approval for systemic bulk edits to incorporate my site optimization.
From a Task to a Tool:
I began the complex audit of over 9,000 strings of messaging by breaking out the project by chapter. My audit focused on navigation tabs and toolbar items first. I identified the 4 categories of UX copy: success messages, error messages, instructional messages, and empty state messages.
Proactive Solutions:
Proposed string alterations were vetted through stakeholders for approval and bulk edit implementation by chapter. The audit tool is visible and transparent – and currently used to guide ongoing projects, provide a pattern template, and a reference source for multiple teams.
The Solution
Rolled out to complement a visual UI redesign, my UX copy edits have driven preference and usability scores, and is currently shared out to project leads and UX principles when designing new product wireframes. The audit tool is also used as a reference for UX designers and researchers when considering new patterns.
